The Classic German Chocolate Cake Recipe


1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs, separated
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
4 oz. German chocolate, finely chopped
1 cup chopped pecans


Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in vanilla.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

1 box German Chocolate Cake Mix, baked and cooled
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 jar caramel sauce
1 tub whipped topping
1 cup chopped pecans


Cut the cooled cake into small squares and place half of them in the bottom of a trifle bowl.
Drizzle half of the sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce over the cake.
Add half of the whipped topping and sprinkle with half of the chopped pecans.
Repeat layering with the remaining cake, sweetened condensed milk, caramel sauce, whipped topping, and chopped pecans.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until set.
